Graduate Research Assistant, Watershed Science, 2014 - 2017

Advisor: Dr. Tim Covino

  • Devised a research project from proposal to manuscript: developed a timeline, acquired a grant from the Colorado Water Institute to hire and manage an Undergraduate Field Assistant, conducted fieldwork, analyzed data, presented results in five conferences, defended a Masters Thesis, and submitted a first-authored scientific manuscript to Water Resources Research

  • Measured stream discharge using velocity-area and salt dilution approaches

  • Monitored water quality and quantity using Campbell Scientific, TruTrack, YSI, Onset, and Fondriest instrumentation

  • Used the diurnal dissolved oxygen technique to quantify stream ecosystem metabolism

  • Conducted hydrologic tracer tests to evaluate stream nutrient retention

  • Installed wells and piezometers to evaluate subsurface flow paths

  • Analyzed and presented data using programs such as MatLab, R Statistical Software, SigmaPlot, and ArcGIS

  • Generated and analyzed paleoclimate records from a Late Quaternary core from the South China Sea and a ~32ky core from Lake Qinghai, China using leaf wax acids & alkanes, alkenones, and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs)

  • Performed laboratory duties including, but not limited to: volumetric dilution, methylation, urea adduction, silica gel chromatography, hazardous waste management, good lab-book practice, and core sampling

  • Operated machinery including, but not limited to: Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS), Flame Ionization Detector for Gas Chromatography (GC-FID), and Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE)
